The BMW 1 Series (E87) marked BMW's ambitious entry into the premium compact hatchback segment. Uniquely in its class, it featured a longitudinal engine layout and rear-wheel drive (RWD), offering a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution and unmatched driving dynamics. The E87 refers specifically to the 5-door hatchback, though the family includes the E81 (3-door), E82 (coupe), and E88 (convertible). A major facelift (LCI - Life Cycle Impulse) was introduced in March 2007, bringing interior quality improvements, revised styling, and the introduction of 'EfficientDynamics' technologies. However, this LCI also introduced the N43 direct-injection petrol engines and N47 diesel engines, both of which severely tarnished the model's reliability reputation due to timing chain and injection issues.
The BMW E87 1 Series is a car of extremes. As a driving machine, it is the pinnacle of the compact class thanks to its RWD chassis. However, as a used car purchase, it is a minefield. If you want petrol: Avoid the 4-cylinders (116i, 118i, 120i) entirely, especially the post-2007 N43 direct-injection models, unless you have a massive repair budget. The ultimate E87 is the 130i (N52): it is highly reliable, sounds glorious, and is a future classic. If you want diesel: Seek out a pre-2007 M47 (118d/120d) and remove the swirl flaps. Avoid the post-2007 N47 diesels unless the seller provides a solid invoice proving the timing chain has been replaced with updated BMW parts.
