Reliability score : 6.2/10

The BMW 1 Series E87 (5-door hatchback) marked BMW's first foray into the modern premium C-segment. 🎯 Verdict

The BMW 1 Series E87 is a car of extremes. It offers the best driving experience in its class, but it is plagued by some of the worst engine reliability issues of its era. Do NOT buy an LCI 4-cylinder model (N43 petrol or N47 diesel) unless you have concrete, documented proof that the timing chain (and injectors for the N43) have been recently replaced by a specialist. The smart buys: A pre-LCI 120d (M47) with the swirl flaps removed, or if budget allows, the magnificent 130i (N52) which is highly reliable and rapidly appreciating as a modern classic. Always ditch the run-flat tires for standard rubber to transform the ride quality.
