The BMW iX3 (G08) is the first 100% electric SUV from the Bavarian brand. Based on the CLAR platform of the ICE X3 (G01), it inaugurates the 5th generation of the BMW electric powertrain (eDrive Gen5), characterized by an electrically excited synchronous motor (without rare earths). Although it is an adaptation of an ICE platform (which implies the presence of a transmission tunnel in the rear and the absence of a front trunk or 'frunk'), the iX3 shines with its remarkable energy efficiency, top-flight comfort, and flawless build quality. It received a very early facelift (LCI) at the end of 2021 to align with the aesthetic and technological evolutions of the ICE X3. It is a rear-wheel drive (RWD) model only, which incidentally motivated BMW's decision not to market it in North America.
The BMW iX3 (G08) is an excellent choice on the used electric vehicle market. Although it betrays its ICE origins with a few architectural compromises (central tunnel, no frunk), it more than compensates with formidable efficiency, often superior to that of competitors with dedicated platforms. The reliability of the eDrive Gen5 motor has been exemplary so far, without the flaws of the brand's older ICE engines. If possible, favor a facelifted version (LCI, late 2021) to benefit from the M Sport Package as standard and a more modern infotainment system. Purchase is highly recommended, provided that the absence of all-wheel drive is not a dealbreaker for your use.
