The first-generation Audi Q8 (code 4M8) is the flagship coupe SUV of the brand with the four rings. Based on the MLB Evo platform (shared with the Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, and Lamborghini Urus), it stands out with a statutory design, preserved roominess despite its sloping roofline, and an exceptional level of interior finish. A true technological showcase, it features mild hybridization (MHEV 48V) on the majority of its V6 and V8 engines. While it excels in ride comfort (especially with the air suspension) and soundproofing, its colossal weight (often exceeding 2.2 tons) penalizes agility and accelerates the wear of consumables (brakes, tires). Overall reliability is good on a purely mechanical level, but marred by electronic failures and a major, recurring problem with the 48V system
The Audi Q8 is a formidable highway cruiser, offering a rare compromise between the dynamism of a coupe and the comfort of a limousine. The gasoline engines (55 TFSI and V8) are smooth and highly performant. However, buying a used Q8 requires extreme financial caution. The endemic problem of the 48V alternator-starter (BSG) on MHEV engines is a sword of Damocles that costs several thousand euros to repair. Furthermore, its gargantuan weight devours brakes and tires at a crazy speed. To be bought imperatively with a crystal-clear history, proof of the BSG replacement, and ideally an extended manufacturer's warranty.
