The fourth-generation Audi A3 (code name 8Y) is based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB Evo platform, shared with the Golf 8. Launched in 2020, it asserts its premium positioning with a more muscular exterior design and a highly digitized interior. While its road handling, sound insulation, and engine efficiency (especially the mild-hybrid TFSI petrol engines) are praised, this generation suffered from numerous software bugs related to the MIB3 infotainment system at its launch. There is also a slight regression in the quality of the plastics in the lower part of the cabin compared to the previous generation (8V). A facelift was carried out in early 2024, correcting most of the electronic shortcomings and introducing minor aesthetic touches as well as an update to the PHEV powertrains.
The Audi A3 8Y is a mechanically very accomplished premium compact, particularly in its TFSI petrol versions. The 1.5 TFSI engine (35 TFSI) represents the most rational choice, offering solid reliability and controlled fuel consumption. However, the 8Y generation was marred by major software problems at its launch. It is therefore strongly advised to target a model produced from mid-2022 onwards, or to ensure that all updates have been carried out at the dealership. Avoid under-equipped entry-level models and prioritize S line or Advanced versions for better resale value.
