Audi A3 8Y (2020 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The fourth-generation Audi A3 (code name 8Y) is based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB Evo platform, shared with the Golf 8. Launched in 2020, it marks a technological breakthrough with massive digitalization of the cabin (MIB3 system) and the electrification of its powertrains (48V MHEV and PHEV). While the perceived build quality has slightly decreased compared to the previous generation (8V) on the lower plastics, it remains the premium benchmark in its segment. A facelift occurred in early 2024, introducing major software improvements, a customizable light signature, and a new raised 'allstreet' version. Mechanically, the internal combustion engines have reached full maturity, but the launch was marred by numerous electronic 'bugs'.

🎯 Verdict

The Audi A3 8Y is a premium compact whose mechanics are paradoxically more reliable than its electronics. The internal combustion engines (EA211 evo, EA888, EA288 evo) are benchmarks for robustness and efficiency. However, models produced between 2020 and mid-2022 suffered from serious software shortcomings (MQB Evo platform) which can spoil the daily experience. Our advice : Prioritize a model produced from late 2022, or ensure the vehicle has received all major dealership updates. The ideal choice remains the 35 TFSI for its versatility, or the 35 TDI for high-mileage drivers. Avoid high-mileage PHEV versions without battery warranty.
