Alfa Romeo Tonale I (2022 – 2025)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The Alfa Romeo Tonale (Generation I) marks a crucial turning point for the Quadrifoglio brand. Positioned in the ultra-competitive premium compact SUV (C-SUV) segment, it is based on the FCA Small Wide 4x4 LWB platform (shared with the Jeep Compass), but has been extensively reworked by Alfa Romeo engineers to offer driving dynamics worthy of the brand (ultra-direct steering, specific damping). It also introduces electrification to Alfa Romeo with micro-hybrid (MHEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. Although its finish is a clear improvement over the brand's past standards, its youth on the market requires some vigilance regarding early software bugs. Overall design score: 7.5/10.

🎯 Verdict

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is an attractive compact SUV that succeeds in offering true driving pleasure in an often sanitized segment. Mechanically, it relies on known Stellantis/FCA bases, which limits the risk of major breakdowns. However, its strong electronic and software component has generated 'childhood illnesses' (screen bugs, gearbox management, phantom alerts). Buying advice: Opt for a late 2023 or 2024 model, which will have benefited from factory fixes. The 1.5 MHEV 160 hp engine is the ideal compromise for daily use. The 1.6 JTDm remains an excellent choice (and very reliable) for high-mileage drivers. The PHEV version is reserved for those who can recharge daily, but requires strict verification of recalls (high-voltage wiring).
