Abarth 500 (2012 – Présent (en t)
Reliability score : 8.0/10
The Abarth 500 (rebranded primarily as the 595 and 695 from 2012 onwards) is a high-performance derivative of the Fiat 500. Powered almost exclusively by the proven 1.4-liter turbocharged FIRE engine (T-Jet in Europe, MultiAir in North America), it offers a raw, old-school hot hatch experience characterized by a loud exhaust note and aggressive styling. Despite its aging platform and ergonomic quirks, it remains a highly sought-after enthusiast car. Recently, the lineup expanded to include the fully electric Abarth 500e.
✅ Strengths
- Incredible exhaust note (especially with Record Monza exhaust)
- Bulletproof 1.4 T-Jet engine block (European models)
- Strong residual values and enthusiast demand
- Massive aftermarket support for tuning and parts
- Compact size makes it an excellent city hot hatch
⚠️ Weaknesses
- Awkward, 'bus-like' driving position (steering wheel lacks reach adjustment)
- Harsh and bouncy ride quality, especially on Competizione models
- Outdated interior plastics and ergonomics
- Small boot and cramped rear seats
- Surprisingly poor turning circle for a small car
🎯 Verdict
The Abarth 500/595/695 is a triumph of character over perfection. Objectively, it suffers from a bouncy ride, an awkward driving position, and outdated interior ergonomics. However, subjectively, it is one of the most charismatic hot hatches of the 21st century. The European 1.4 T-Jet engine (especially with the Garrett turbo) is remarkably reliable and can handle high mileage if the timing belt and oil changes are strictly adhered to. North American buyers must be more cautious with the MultiAir engine. Buy on condition, favor unmodified examples with full service history, and ensure the Record Monza exhaust valve isn't seized.
