BMW SERIE 5 (2010 – 2016)

Reliability score : 6.5/10

The BMW 5 Series F10 (Sedan) and F11 (Touring/Estate) marked a return to a more conservative and elegant design language after the polarizing E60 generation. Built on the same platform as the 7 Series (F01), it offers exceptional ride comfort, high-quality interior materials, and excellent sound insulation. However, this shared architecture resulted in a significant weight increase, slightly dulling the traditional BMW driving dynamics. The introduction of the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP) was a game-changer, offering seamless shifts and improved fuel economy. While generally a solid premium vehicle, its reliability is heavily dependent on the chosen engine and strict adherence to maintenance schedules, particularly regarding timing chains and cooling systems.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW 5 Series F10/F11 is a superb luxury cruiser, but buying one requires extreme caution regarding the powertrain. Avoid the 550i (N63) at all costs unless you have a massive repair budget. Be very wary of pre-2014 520d (N47) and pre-2015 520i/528i (N20) unless there is documented proof that the timing chain has been replaced. The sweet spot of the range is the 530d (N57) or the post-2014 520d (B47) for diesels, and the 535i (N55) for petrols. Always prioritize a car with a flawless, documented maintenance history over a cheaper, neglected example.
