BMW SERIE 2 (2014 – 2021)

Reliability score : 7.5/10

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) and Gran Tourer (F46) represent a historic turning point for the Bavarian manufacturer. Introduced in 2014, they were BMW's first-ever front-wheel-drive vehicles and their first foray into the MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) segment. Built on the UKL platform (shared with MINI), they prioritize interior space, practicality, and family-oriented versatility over traditional BMW rear-wheel-drive dynamics. The F45 offers 5 seats, while the longer F46 Gran Tourer offers up to 7 seats. Despite purist skepticism, they became a commercial success, offering premium build quality, efficient modular engines (B37/B38 3-cylinders and B47/B48 4-cylinders), and a highly practical cabin.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) and Gran Tourer (F46) are excellent premium family haulers, provided you buy the right year and engine. They offer a compelling mix of badge prestige, interior practicality, and decent driving dynamics. However, early models (2014-2015) of the 218i must be approached with extreme caution due to fatal crankshaft bearing flaws. Diesel models are fantastic for long distances but require absolute confirmation that the EGR cooler recall has been completed. For the best reliability and peace of mind, target a post-facelift (LCI) model from 2018 onwards, ideally a 220i or a fully-serviced 218d.
